The Wine of the Wine Can Chicken

Sight: Straw Yellow

Nose: Loads of minerality/chalk right up front fills the nostrils and is followed quickly by green apple and apricots. As you go deeper you start pulling in some Froot Loop type aromas.  This is one of those wines, for me, where I start licking my lips before the glass even touches my mouth.

Palate: Again, that minerality and acidity make sure you know they are there first and foremost before anyone else comes out to play.  After that you find green apple and honey-dew melon making an entrance as the wine transitions to a nice finish.  The acidity keeps the palate cleaned out though and really sets you up for some food, like maybe, I don’t know, wine can chicken.

The Pairing

The chicken and wine pairing was a good one, but it really didn’t blow me away.  What really nailed it though was the zucchini paired with the wine.  I will mark that one down that grilled zucchini and vouvray are a pairing to remember. LOL

I also want to apologize to everyone for not having a trivia post last week.  Things got away from me and there were other priorities that took precedent.  I will do everything I can to make sure this doesn’t happen again.

The Blind Wine

Sight: Purple with permanent marker type glass staining. Your teeth and tongue will be purple after drinking a glass of this wine.

Nose: This one was a hot mess of odors.  Grape juice, dark cherries, boysenberries, leather, crayons, air fresheners…seriously, just watch the video to hear everything I was getting out of this one.

Palate: BOOOM goes the fruit bomb.  This is a big, unapologetic, in your face bottle of wine.  Tannins, acid, finish, it’s all big and yet it manages to keep a decent balance to it.  There is oak for sure, but it doesn’t come off as a total oak monster either.  Skip the food pairings with this one as I think it would overpower any dish you put in front of it, but if you like the big’uns you will enjoy this bottle of wine. 86 points.

Tonnara Bianco from the Club W wines

Sight: Yellow with a bit of viscosity showing

Nose: Citrus notes, peaches, river rock, overall not a real big nose on this one, but I did like what I was getting from it.

Palate: A lot of citrus right up from that transitions to a big mouthful of rocks, not your typical minerality, but a big presence of  straight rocky goodness.  There is a bit of a spike in an alcohol type flavor just as the wine crosses the mid-palate that quickly goes away as the finish begins that is a bit odd.  I did taste this wine at near room temperature, so if it was chilled down a bit I bet that spike wouldn’t be there.  The finish is a decent length with those minerally type flavors carrying through.

Sight: Straw yellow

Nose: Lime, Green apple, peaches, honey, flowers

Palate: The sweetness of the added sugar does come through on this but not so much that is makes it cloying.  Lime, peach, other citrus notes as well as some honey all come through on this wine.  If you are a fan of Moscato or New Age this would be a wine style that you would like.

Biltmore Red

Biltmore Century Red

Sight: Ruby that is really light on the edges and gets much darker towards the middle.

Nose: Red cherries, blackberry, violets, along with some mustiness and oak presence showing here.

Palate: You can really tell there were multiple wines used in this blend.  The acidity of the Sangiovese is definitely noticeable right away.  The flavors of blue/black berry jam along with some green/black pepper let you know that there was some Zin and Merlot added to the mix.  The oak does come through a little strong on the finish, but overall you are left with an intriguing wine that will keep you tasting.
