Good stuff guys. This is an example of why I have to be more patient with my wine and let it sit a while.

Jeff Solomon, do you have a rubric for your scale or is it mostly by “feel”?

  Thanks for taking the time to watch us nerd it up, Jim. Yeah, it’s tough to give a wine the time to open up, especially since you don’t know what whine, or even if you will open a wine, several hours before you are going to drink it. That is why I turn to the Vinturi more often than not. And I fully agree, if you like something and are passionate about it you are not a snob.

  Hi Jim,
  If you open up the Wine Spectator, you will see the “rubric” that they use (and I tend to follow). The problem is that “taste” is subjective, and that a rubric is used to make things more objective. That’s why the scoring system is such a proverbial “can of worms”.
  I look at scoring this way…
  50-69 = Congratulations! Your wine is made from grapes.
  70-79 = I can drink it. I may drink it. I would not suggest you even bother.
  80-84 = It’s good. I would recommend it, but it will not blow your mind.
  85-89 = This is a really good wine. You should try it.
  90-94 = This is a great wine. Go get it… Now.
  96-100 = Classic. This is what all wine should taste like, but even the best winemakers in the world would have trouble making these consistantly.
